Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is an important cause of hospitalisation and death. Annual incidence in the USA is between five and 11 cases per 1000 adults, and more than 20 cases per 1000 in adults over 65 years of age. Up to 80% of patients with CAP are treated as outpatients, and mortality in these patients is usually less than 1%. The remaining patients require inpatient management, and the mortality is 12—36% for those admitted to intensive-care units.
